Most Ryzen 9 9950X installs need a BIOS update on AM5 X670 and B650 boards before the chip will post. Flash via the BIOS Flashback button on the rear IO if the board is brand new, or update from within the BIOS if you already have a working CPU.
The 9950X is a Zen 5 chip on the same AM5 socket that launched with Zen 4, but motherboards manufactured before mid-2024 ship with older AGESA microcode. Without the right AGESA, the board cannot recognise Zen 5 silicon and the system will not post, leaving you staring at a blank screen and possibly a CPU-LED on the diagnostic panel. Boards branded with a Zen 5 Ready sticker on the box are pre-flashed at the factory.
If you have no working CPU yet, use BIOS Flashback. Download the latest BIOS from your motherboard maker, rename the file as instructed, drop it on a FAT32 USB stick, plug it into the labelled Flashback port, connect 24-pin and EPS power without installing anything else, then press and hold the Flashback button for around four seconds. The light blinks for two to six minutes. Once it stops, your board is ready for the 9950X.
Evetech stocks the 9950X across X870E, X670E and B650 boards, with most current stock pre-flashed for Zen 5. SA pricing on the 9950X sits around R17,000 to R18,500 depending on bundle. If you are upgrading an older AM5 build, do the BIOS update during loadshedding-free hours and ideally with a UPS in line, because a power cut mid-flash can brick the board. Most boards now support a backup BIOS feature, but relying on it is risky when a R7,000 motherboard is on the line.
Flash to the latest stable BIOS, not the newest beta. Use FAT32 USB, follow the maker's exact filename rule, and never cut power mid-flash.
It outpaces the 7950X by 15 to 20 percent in productivity and roughly 10 percent in gaming, while pulling slightly less power.
