Quick Answer

The Steam Deck LCD 256 GB is the most affordable handheld gaming PC at Evetech, currently priced around R9,999–R11,999. It runs popular SA games at 30–60 fps at 800p and is far cheaper than a gaming laptop at the same performance level.

LCD vs OLED Steam Deck for Mdantsane Buyers

The LCD 256 GB model: IPS 800p 60 Hz, 40 Wh battery, 2–4 hours gaming. The OLED 512 GB model: OLED 90 Hz with HDR, 50 Wh battery, 3–5 hours gaming, priced around R14,999–R16,999. For Mdantsane buyers prioritising the lowest entry cost, the LCD is the right starting point. The OLED's screen upgrade is genuinely better but costs R4,000–R5,000 more — worth it only if you primarily play in a dark room where the OLED contrast shows.

FPS Benchmarks at 800p

Steam Deck LCD at 800p Low: GTA V averages 40–50 fps, EA FC titles hit 55–60 fps, Hades and Hollow Knight run at locked 60 fps, Cyberpunk 2077 Low averages 28–35 fps. Using a 30 fps lock in GTA V and Cyberpunk creates smoother gameplay than uncapped variable frames. The AMD RDNA 2 GPU handles most indie and AA titles without compromise. Use the steam Deck's TDP slider at 10–12W for most games to balance performance and battery.

Storage Options: 256 GB vs MicroSD

The LCD base model includes 256 GB eMMC storage — enough for about 8–12 large games. Expanding with a 256 GB microSD card (~R350–R500 at Evetech) gives 512 GB total, covering most players' active libraries. MicroSD installation is tool-free and games are managed via the Steam UI. For Mdantsane buyers doing large downloads over mobile data, install to the SSD for faster load times.
