Baldur's Gate 3 crashes on PC usually come from Vulkan renderer instability on older GPU drivers, save file corruption in cloud sync, background applications conflicting with BG3's memory allocator, or an OC that destabilises Act 3's Lower City where the engine is heaviest. Switching Vulkan to DirectX 11, disabling cloud sync, and loading optimised BIOS defaults resolves most cases.
🎮 Switch renderer to DirectX 11
In the BG3 launcher, click the gear icon → select "DirectX 11" instead of Vulkan. Apply. Launch the game and test the scene that was crashing. Vulkan is faster by 5-10% on some GPUs but Vulkan driver regressions on NVIDIA and AMD are the #1 cause of BG3 Act 3 crashes. DX11 is rock-solid. Keep DX11 for stability, switch back to Vulkan once you have installed the latest GPU driver and confirmed your Act 3 save loads cleanly. Quality graphics cards with current drivers handle either renderer well.
☁️ Cloud save corruption
Open Steam → BG3 → Properties → General → turn off "Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud" or on GOG, same idea. Copy your save files from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public\Savegames\Story to a backup folder. Delete the Steam Cloud cache for BG3 by removing the userdata\ folder from your Steam install. Re-launch, re-enable cloud if you want, and test. Corrupted cloud saves silently re-overwrite local saves and crash BG3 at load. Backup regularly on a fast external drive.
BG3 Act 3 Lower City is the single most CPU-intensive area in the game. If crashes only happen there, upgrade or overclock your cooling first because thermal throttling under heavy CPU load is the root cause. A proper CPU cooler upgrade can stabilise Lower City without any software change. {{/TipBox}}
🧩 Disable mods and overlays
If you installed mods via Mod Manager or BG3 Mod Manager, disable them all. Mods that worked in Act 1 often crash in Act 3 because of deeper engine hooks. Disable Steam overlay, Discord overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, and RivaTuner (unless you are using it only for a framerate cap). MSI Afterburner is fine to leave on. Clean up the in-game mod folder at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods if you suspect any stuck entries. On a fresh gaming PC, a no-overlay, no-mod config runs BG3 at maximum stability.
⚙️ System-level stability
Load BIOS optimised defaults. Disable CPU OC and XMP temporarily. Run MemTest86 for one pass to confirm RAM integrity. Update chipset and GPU drivers to current stable releases. Verify game files in Steam (right-click BG3 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify). Confirm your NVMe SSD has at least 150GB free for shader cache and save files. Once Act 3 runs without crashes on these settings, re-enable XMP and your OC one at a time to isolate what needs to be tuned back.
