An antivirus setup is not overkill for an IT student, but several overlapping security suites are. A sensible setup combines supported built-in protection, updates, restricted privileges, cautious downloads and tested backups. Lab work should be isolated rather than trusting a scanner to contain everything.
Audit host and lab boundaries
List the operating system, virtual machines, coding tools, browser extensions and removable media. Confirm firewall and real-time protection status, then test a normal build or virtual-lab exercise for performance. Use snapshots and isolated networks for deliberately vulnerable systems, never the personal host environment.
