A surveillance hard drive is not the preferred drive for a Minecraft server. It is tuned for continuous camera recording, while a game server benefits from low-latency general storage, backups and reliable small-file access.

Protect the world separately

Measure world size, player count, modpack and backup frequency. Run the server from suitable storage and watch tick time, disk latency and growth. Schedule versioned world backups, then restore one copy to another folder and join it. Keep plug-in versions and configuration with the save.

If the home also has cameras, place footage on a compatible NVR drive under separate retention and permissions. Do not treat one shared disk as redundancy.

Minecraft servers should also back up player data, permissions, plug-in configuration and world-generation settings. Keep version information with each archive. A restored world that opens with missing mods or permissions is not a complete recovery.

Server backup frequency should match how much play the group is willing to lose. A weekly copy may be inadequate for an active shared world.

Verify one restored player inventory as well as the world map.

The Seagate SkyHawk 2TB drive is verified at R1,340 for suitable recorders. The WD Blue SN5000 2TB SSD is verified at R1,684. Confirm interface, workload, host compatibility, warranty and backup needs.
