Free up to 212 GB on your PS5, because Rockstar says the install size depends on the device. That is a heavy pull on capped South African LTE, and Evetech lists a 500GB WD Blue SN5100 NVMe M.2 2280 drive at R1,999 to check against Sony's fit rules.
Clear out up to 212 GB before 19 November, because that is the most space Rockstar says GTA 6 on PS5 will take and most consoles are already part full. The pre-download opens on 10 November, which gives you nine days to sort the storage and the data bundle before launch day.
Free at least 212 GB on the PS5 for GTA 6. Sony lets PS5 games be stored and played from a compatible M.2 SSD, so a spare slot is a sensible place to put it. Among Evetech's solid state drives, the 500GB WD Blue SN5100 NVMe M.2 2280 is a PCIe Gen 4.0 drive at R1,999.
Rockstar words the 212 GB as an "up to" figure that depends on the device, so treat it as the ceiling for the console version rather than a promise of the final day-one download. Patches stack on top of it. A drive that has 220 GB free on launch morning has almost no room for the first update.
Count what you already hold. A PS5 with 40 or 50 big installs loses its free space quickly, and one open-world title of this size is roughly 42 percent of a 500GB drive's nominal capacity. Delete or archive two or three older games now, because deleting is the only step that costs nothing and takes minutes.
Open Settings, then Storage, then Console Storage, and read the free space against 212 GB. If the number is under 250 GB, plan the clear-out today rather than on the 19th.
Sony's rule is that PS5 games can be stored and played from a compatible M.2 SSD installed in the expansion slot. GTA 6 is a PS5 game, and nothing published so far carves it out, but confirm on release that it launches from the M.2 drive without a prompt to move it.
Sony's published fit rules are the hard part. The drive must be a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe model in the 250 GB to 8 TB range, Sony recommends reads of 5,500 MB/s or faster, and the drive needs a heatsink that fits under the slot cover. A drive that misses any one of those can fail to install or throttle badly.
The WD Blue SN5100 reads up to 6600MB/s over PCIe Gen 4.0, which clears the 5,500 MB/s mark on paper. Whether it needs a separate heatsink for your console is a question for Sony's fit page, because the cover leaves limited height.
This is where the pain sits. On a capped LTE package, 212 GB can be most of a month's allowance for a household, and on a small fibre bundle it can take the shared line for hours while someone else is streaming. Start the pre-download in the early hours, when the line is quiet, and check your balance before you press the button.
Two practical moves help. First, preload on 10 November and let it finish across several nights instead of one. Second, leave the console on rest mode so the download continues after you go to bed.
A 1 TB NVMe SSD alongside the console's internal drive means you stop deleting one game to fit another. The best-selling SSDs page shows which capacities South African buyers pick most.
Free at least 212 GB, the most Rockstar lists for the install. Add headroom for the first patch, so aim for 250 GB if you can.
Sony says PS5 games can be stored and played from a compatible M.2 SSD. Confirm on launch day that GTA 6 behaves the same way.
Check capacity (250 GB to 8 TB), PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, the recommended 5,500 MB/s read speed, and the heatsink height. Missing one can stop the drive working.
Yes. A download of up to 212 GB is heavy for capped LTE or a small fibre bundle, so preload overnight and check your data balance first.

The launch date is 19 November 2026, with pre-download from 10 November.
