Can a USB-C Monitor Charge a PROLED MacBook Pro While Showing Video?
A USB-C display can carry video and power. Evetech listed the ViewSonic TD1655 for R5,299 on 29 October 2026; its 60W limit is below Apple charging recommendations.

A dock can make a laptop desk easier to connect, but the number on the dock's power specification needs careful reading. USB-C dock power delivery depends on the charger, the dock and the laptop together.
The Port Designs 901913 dock supports USB-C power delivery up to 100W, but that rating does not establish how much reaches the laptop. As at 29 October 2026, Evetech listed the dock at R1,399. The charger, cable and dock all affect the power path.
The charger supplies power to the dock, and the dock connects to the MacBook. The laptop, charger and cable must all support the required USB Power Delivery connection. A dock can use some of the incoming power for its own operation and attached devices, so its stated input or maximum capability should not automatically be treated as measured power at the host.
The Port Designs 901913 documentation specifies USB-C power delivery up to 100W. It also lists HDMI output at up to 4K and 30Hz and describes a single or mirrored display mode for macOS. Those display limits belong to this dock and should not be applied to every USB-C product.
For the laptop, Apple lists charging support through the Thunderbolt 5 ports for its MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display. Its maker also provides a MagSafe 3 connection. Decide whether the dock's pass-through route or a separate power connection is appropriate for the desk you are building.
Apple recommends a minimum 70W power source for charging the 14-inch PROLED model and lists fast charging with a USB Power Delivery source rated at least 96W. For the 16-inch model, Apple recommends at least 94W with fast charging requiring at least 140W. For the 16-inch fast-charge setup, Apple specifies its 140W adapter with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable or a compatible 140W USB-C cable.
The dock's up-to-100W figure is below the 16-inch fast-charge source requirement. Even when a dock's advertised figure is above a laptop's minimum, confirm the actual output and cable support before concluding that it will provide the needed power. The manufacturer figure alone does not establish the power available after the dock's own consumption.
You can plan a separate charging connection when a dock cannot meet the required power. The practical choice depends on the computer's configuration, the charger used and which ports you need free. Do not buy a cable solely because its connector fits; verify its power rating as well.
Power is only one part of a dock purchase. List the screen and accessories you intend to connect, then compare their plugs with the available ports. Apple specifies HDMI, an SDXC slot, a headphone jack, MagSafe and three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the PROLED model itself. Some users may not need a dock for a small setup.
When using the Port Designs dock for a display, its manufacturer lists up to 4K at 30Hz through HDMI. That is different from the maximum capabilities Apple lists for its laptop's own outputs. The lowest relevant limit in a chain can constrain the resulting connection; check the monitor and cable as well.
If you need more than one display, pay particular attention to the dock's macOS mode. The manufacturer describes single or mirrored displays, so do not assume it can create two independent extended screens merely because a product has several video connectors. For another dock, read that manufacturer's documentation separately.
The R1,399 figure is the dated listing for the Port Designs 901913 dock. It is not the cost of the new PROLED laptop or of an additional charger. A South African buyer can use it as a concrete dock budget and compare other monitor accessories against the actual ports required.
The MacBook range gives a separate view of laptop configurations. Confirm current availability and prices before purchasing, and match any dock specification to the exact model number on the listing. Two docks with similar names can have different power and display capabilities.
No. The dock's stated maximum does not by itself prove the power delivered at the host after the dock and accessories use power.
Apple lists a minimum recommended 70W source and a 96W or higher source for fast charging.
No. Apple specifies 140W or higher for fast charging that model, above the dock manufacturer's up-to-100W rating.
The manufacturer lists up to 4K at 30Hz. Confirm the rest of the connection chain for your display.
No. The manufacturer's description specifies a single or mirrored display mode for Mac OS.
