ASUS formally announced its XG Core external Radeon dock on 6 November. The unit combines an RX 9060 XT LP with 16GB of GDDR6 and a USB4 host link rated up to 40Gbps. If you already own a compatible laptop, compare the cost of keeping it with the cost of a desktop upgrade.
The compact dock was shown before the formal announcement. ASUS now describes how it connects to compatible laptops, handhelds and mini PCs, and identifies HDMI and DisplayPort display outputs and GPU Tweak III support. The housing measures 144 by 117 by 39mm. The earlier Gamescom material identifies a 75W design. These details help with placement, connections and cooling expectations. They do not measure how fast it will run in your games on the host you own.
The most important decision is whether your exact system supports an external GPU over the intended port. Check the manufacturer's manual for the particular model or configuration. A connector with the right shape can still expose a different set of capabilities. The supplied or recommended cable, the host's implementation and the operating system also matter. If you already have a monitor, plan how it will connect to the dock before choosing where to put everything.

At writing time, an active local listing showed the XFX SWIFT RX 9060 XT OC Dual Fan 16GB desktop card in stock at R9,999. The desktop card is a separate product. Treat amd radeon rx 9060 xt models as references if you have a compatible desktop with enough space and power. The wider all amd radeon graphics cards category helps if you are also considering an upgrade at a lower or higher price. The bandwidth figure on the dock is a USB4 link ceiling. A desktop graphics card connects internally through PCIe, with different bandwidth and power constraints. A matching GPU family name and memory capacity are not enough to predict equal performance. For a practical comparison, watch for tests on a host close to yours and look for results in the workload you care about. An external screen connected to the dock and the notebook's own screen are separate test cases worth checking in a review.
The active Evetech name search returned no exact XG Core match on 6 November. There is no verified Rand price for the dock in this snapshot. Work out your spending ceiling before chasing an overseas listing. If a desktop upgrade would require a new case or power supply, include that in the desktop cost. If the dock would also need a monitor or a different cable for your intended setup, include those on the external side. The existing ROG XG Core compatibility guide covers the broader bandwidth and host questions. For this launch, the useful next step is to check whether the final local bundle identifies the power arrangement and included cable. A compact enclosure has real value if you move the host between locations or cannot replace the computer. For someone with an available desktop slot and no need for portability, the local card comparison has fewer unknowns.
