A PoE CCTV kit is overkill for most first-year students in temporary accommodation. It becomes sensible only across several fixed authorised camera positions where continuous local recording and wired reliability justify installation. The supplied factpacks do not verify a complete PoE kit, so no price or package should be inferred.
Start with permission and one real risk
Students in res, digs or sectional-title buildings must obtain permission before drilling, running cables or filming communal areas. Map the private entrance, parking and accessible windows. Better locks, lighting and one carefully placed indoor camera may solve more without permanent installation. The Tapo C212 indoor Wi-Fi camera is verified at R451.
A PoE system needs compatible cameras, powered ports, cable, storage, mounting and secure remote access. Estimate footage retention and test night detail at the actual distance. Use unique credentials, updates and restricted viewers. Never aim into neighbours’ rooms or record shared spaces beyond what permission allows.
Choose the wired kit only for a stable property where several viewpoints are justified and someone will maintain the NVR. For a student room, keep the setup proportionate and portable. Security equipment cannot replace an emergency contact or property rules. Protect the study laptop and coursework backups separately from camera footage. Keep any student-room installation reversible and clearly documented.
